NEW HARVEST – SATAKUNTA ART AT PORI ART MUSEUM

PRESS RELEASE

In addition to the physical preservation of art, one of the key tasks of an art museum is to study the phenomenon known as visual art and to compile materials related to this research. As a regional art museum, one of the responsibilities of the Pori Art Museum is to document and study the visual art scene in the Satakunta region and to gather archives for future research.

This mission has long been reflected in the museum’s activities. Since 1981, the museum has been mapping the work of several artists from the Satakunta region. For the general public, these artist-specific surveys are most familiar through the extensive, retrospective exhibitions showcasing the work of individual artists, which the museum has hosted annually.

However, these exhibitions alone are not sufficient for comprehensively mapping the art scene in the museum’s area of operation. For this reason, the museum occasionally organizes group exhibitions that feature the work of multiple artists. Last year, the museum conducted an open, juried exhibition at the Poriginal Gallery to survey the work of artists from Satakunta. This inaugural gallery exhibition showcased a total of 39 visual artists.

In late summer 1985, as part of its regional art museum activities, the Pori Art Museum surveyed a sample of the most recent works by artists from Satakunta. A total of 24 artists were selected for this sample. The 135 surveyed works were brought to the museum and photographed. Based on this inventory, an exhibition has now been organized in the museum’s main exhibition space.

A modern art museum should not only be a conservational and research-oriented scientific institution but also a creative force capable of fostering lasting interest in visual art.

The following artists present their new harvest of works:

Hannu Artinaho, Kerttu Horila, Tuula Juti, Eija Kantola, Anja Karkku-Hohti, Onni Kerola, Ensio Lamberg, Anja Levoranta, Pekka Mattila, Henry Merimaa, Eila Minkkinen, Pertti Mäkinen, Jaakko Niemelä, Mikko Paakkola, Olli-Pekka Riihikoski, Kauko Räike, Sinikka Räike, Elina Salo, Pekka Solin, Tuula Solin, Juhani Tarna, Immo Tuominen.
