THE SITE OF PAINTING
What is the status of painting in the field of art in the 2000s? The Site of Painting charts the development of painting and the modernist tradition in Finnish contemporary art. Starting from the 1960s, the tradition of international conceptual art and minimalism declared the demise of painting. Painting in general, structural abstract painting in particular, has enjoyed a central, canonised status in Finnish art. Modernism was channelled into non-figurative painting. Postmodern art theory arrived in Finland in the 1980s, and the artforms that had previously been marginal or “new” became mainstream, such as conceptual and environmental art, performance and installation art. This was also reflected in the status of painting.
The artists in the exhibition are Terike Haapoja, Toni Hautamäki, Terhi Heino, Aino Kannisto, Jouni Kujansuu, Jaakko Niemelä, Jussi Niva, Miika Nyyssönen, Tarja Pitkänen-Walter, Anssi Pulkkinen, Jukka Rusanen and Tatu Tuominen.
