FORME VIVANTE – THE TRADITION OF FRENCH CONTEMPORARY ART
PRESS RELEASE
A major exhibition of contemporary French art opens at the Pori Art Museum, shedding light on the evolution of French constructivism over the past 30 years. The exhibition draws inspiration from the 1952 touring exhibition “Contemporary Art from Paris” (“Klar Form”), which featured numerous masters of the constructivist movement. Representing this older generation of artists in the current exhibition are Jean Arp, Olle Baertling, Alexander Calder, Robert Delaunay, Sonia Delaunay, César Domela, Jean Gorin, Auguste Herbin, Robert Jacobsen, Fernand Léger, Alberto Magnelli, Richard Mortensen, Serge Poliakoff, and Victor Vasarely.
The development of constructivism in later decades is illustrated by works from the following artists:
Martin Barré, Christian Bonnefoi, Daniel Buren, Louis Cane, Geneviève Claisse, Daniel Dezeuze, Pierre Dunoyer, Simon Hantaï, Micha Laury, François Morellet, Jean-Pierre Pincemin, Jean-Pierre Raynaud, François Rouan, Jesús Rafael Soto, Takis, Jean Tinguely, Claude Viallat, and Jean-Luc Vilmouth.
The exhibition is officially organized by the Association d’Action Artistique Française and the Finnish Contemporary Art Society (Nykytaide ry). It is curated by Museum Director Dominique Vieville and Professor Maire Gullichsen. The President of Finland, Mauno Koivisto, has graciously agreed to act as the exhibition’s patron.
In 1984, the exhibition will travel to Helsinki Art Hall in January-February, Malmö Art Hall in March, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Calais, France, in May.
