THE ZINC SCULPTURES OF PORI TOWN HALL
The unique zinc sculptures cast by Otto Meyer & Comp of Stockholm in the 1890s will be on display to the public for four days in honor of Pori Day. After the exhibition, the sculptures will be returned to their original location atop the Pori Town Hall, designed by C.L. Engel.
THE TOWN HALL SCULPTURES RETURN TO THEIR PLACE
The sculptures will be reinstalled on the facade of the Town Hall on Thursday, 2 October 2014. To commemorate the event, a public ceremony will take place in front of the Town Hall, beginning at 12:00 PM.
Speakers include Diana Bergroth-Lampinen, Chair of the Pori City Council.
Musical performances will be provided by the band Pesofati and the choir Körrit, directed by Taisto Lähteenmäki.
Restoration Background
In November 2013, the Technical Service Center approved a restoration proposal submitted by PRM-Yhtiöt Oy. This included the restoration and reinstallation of the sculptures, along with appropriate guarantees for the work. The restoration adhered to the damage assessment and repair plan drafted by metal conservator Elina Remsu.
The project was carried out entirely on a volunteer basis. Although Winnova provided workshop facilities free of charge and additional support was offered, including the analysis of zinc alloys, material costs brought the total cost of the project to 16,000 euros, funded by the city.
The restoration was conducted by a team of metalwork professionals: welding master Eero Niittynen, welding instructor Teuvo Mattila, and technician Markku Tanttinen, who served as the driving force behind the volunteer effort. Each team member dedicated several hundred hours of work, both collaboratively and independently, to ensure the sculptures were properly repaired.
If all goes according to plan, the Goddess of Justice (Justitia) and her two heralds—Renaissance-clad soldiers—will once again greet the citizens of Pori from the edge of the Town Hall roof starting at 12:00 PM on Thursday, 2 October 2014.
