ARTIST OF THE PORI DAY 1980

PRESS RELEASE

The Pori Art Museum is launching a series of presentations of individual artists’ personalities in the region by presenting the visual world of Into Linturi, a master of visual art from the region of Satakunta. The aim is to select each year an ‘Artist of The Pori Day (Porin päivä)’, whose work will be presented either as a broader retrospective overview or as a sample focusing on a specific theme.

Into Linturi, the 1980 Pori Day artist, is presented first and foremost as an excellent draughtsman. Although Linturi himself has always emphasised his drawing skills, this aspect has perhaps received too little attention when assessing his work.

Into Linturi is known above all for his depictions of the landscape of Satakunta, but his work also includes a large number of expressive and simplified portraits of forms and people. The exhibition also includes a number of church pictures, executed with the finest combinations of colour and form, which reflect the authentic atmosphere of old churches. Memories of numerous trips abroad include bright landscape sketches and views of France and Italy painted from them.

This small-scale exhibition is part of the Museum’s wider inventory of Linturi’s work. In recent months, the museum has photographed and catalogued nearly 300 of Linturi’s works, paintings and drawings. This work has made it possible to document a considerable amount of information on the artist Linturi’s personality and art. The aim is to put together as comprehensive a retrospective exhibition of Linturi’s work as possible when he turns 80.

Into Linturi was born on 21 October 1902 in Köyliö. He studied fine arts at the Finnish School of Art and Industry (1921-24), the Finnish Art Association’s School of Drawing (1924-26) and the Free Art School (1947). He has held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions since 1928. He was awarded a state artist’s pension in 1972.
