BASE COLLECTIONS – NEW ACQUISITIONS, DONATIONS AND DEPOSITS 1982-1990
This summer, Pori Art Museum presents an exhibition showcasing a selection of works acquired, donated, or deposited by the museum from 1982 to 1990, with a particular focus on acquisitions made in the past three years. The majority of the works represent Finnish and international art from the 1980s.
Many of the exhibited works have previously been displayed as part of the museum’s exhibitions. Pori Art Museum strives to integrate its exhibition and research activities with its collection development, creating a mutually supportive and documentative relationship. For example, the series of works on display in the museum café is part of Swiss artist George Steinmann’s 1989 exhibition Hagaldom. This exhibition is further documented in a publication released this year.
The exhibition also features distinct sections dedicated to Estonian and Cuban artists. Works by Siim-Tanel Annus, Leonhard Lapin, and Jüri Okas were part of the 1989 exhibition Structure and Metaphysics, which showcased contemporary Estonian art at Pori Art Museum. Cuban art, introduced in the museum’s April–May 1990 exhibition of young Cuban artists, is represented in the summer exhibition by wall works directly executed by José Bedia and pieces by Marta María Pérez, Gory, and Ciro Quintana. Catalogues have been published for both the Estonian and Cuban exhibitions.
Contemporary Finnish art is represented in the exhibition by works such as Mox Mäkelä’s installation Myötäpäivä, located in the small exhibition hall, and Jan-Erik Andersson’s installation sculpture Postcard No. 1, previously featured in Andersson’s retrospective exhibition organized by Pori Art Museum in spring 1990. Among the summer exhibition artists, Kari Cavén and José Bedia also represented their respective countries at the Venice Biennale this summer.
Pori Art Museum’s summer exhibition highlights the museum’s commitment to documenting and showcasing both domestic and international art, reflecting its dynamic role in the contemporary art scene.
The exhibition features works by the following artists:
