PRINTMAKING – PENTTI KASKIPURO AND HANS D. VOSS
PRESS RELEASE
A joint exhibition by Pentti Kaskipuro and Hans D. Voss presents the work of the renowned Finnish and German graphic artist side by side. In many ways, the two artists are kindred spirits: the outward characteristics of their work are simplicity of composition and structural clarity, timelessness and a certain surrealism. The black-and-white nature of the works and the festive atmosphere they create also reinforce the cohesion of the artists’ personalities.
Pentti Kaskipuro’s (b. 1930 in Helsinki) graphics range from the humble subjects of everyday life, groups of mushrooms, onions, soda cans, milk cans, etc. The objects as such are not important, but the mood and meaning created by the works is what counts. Kaskipuro’s works are technically polished. Primarily an artist of light and shadow, he concentrates on aquatint and dry needle techniques, but he also makes skilful use of the expressive possibilities of etching and mezzotint.
Pentti Kaskipuro has received awards at international exhibitions of graphic art, including II prize at the Norwegian 1st Biennale of Graphic Art 1972, a gold medal at the Florence Biennale of Graphic Art 1972, the City of Palermo Prize at the same Biennale 1974 and the Prins Eugen Medal 1974. He has long been a teacher of graphic art at the University of Art and Design and has been active in the art scene in Finland, for example as President of The Association of Finnish Printmakers in 1970-73. He was appointed professor of art in 1974.
Hans D. Voss (b. 1926) from Bremen has two characteristics: the relief structure of his works and dark colours. The relief structure was adopted by Voss from the informalists’ interest in the material and its expressive possibilities. After a free informalistic phase, he moved on to more rigorous formal solutions. The free formal language was replaced by geometric forms. In the late 1960s, the use of photographs and other imagery was combined with a black and white colour scale and geometric structure. In his serigraphs, for example, he combines fragments of images from well-known works of art.
