PEKKA KAUHANEN

In conjunction with the show of the summer exhibition, the sculptor Pekka Kauhanen will create an independent work in the museum yard, reflecting and interpreting the outdoor character of the old warehouse building and its yard. The sculptures impart a new dimension to the summer exhibition and its main emphasis is on colour and light.

The origins of modern color painting lie in France. When Sigurd Frosterus, a renowned Finnish architect who introduced the concept of modernism into Finnish art, encountered Neo-Impressionism at the Paris World Exhibition in 1908, he was inspired to publish Regnbågsfärgernas segertåg (The Triumph of Rainbow Colors). This marked the arrival of modern color painting in Finland. Within this tradition, the Free Art School holds a central role. Founded in 1935, the school drew its inspiration from early 20th-century French private free academies, whose influence is distinctly visible in the history of modern Nordic painting.

The Free Art School is dedicated to the tradition of painting and believes in its creative vitality, despite the fact that, in today’s increasingly diverse art world, painting is often regarded as unfashionable or merely a historical relic of modernism.

The In the Shadow of Light exhibition aligns with two key displays: an exhibition of works by prominent artists associated with the Free Art School in this millennium, and a five-part series titled On the Way – Students in a Transforming Space, featuring works by students from the painting classes of the 2007–2008 academic year.

The On the Way series begins with the Work in Progress / Night or Day exhibition. Subsequent exhibitions include Portraits by the fourth-year class (opening July 1), Broken Telephone / Chinese Whispers by the first-year class (opening July 29), Epidemic by the second-year class (opening August 19), and the series finale, We Are All Too Busy, featuring works by fourth-year artist Virve Viita, opening on September 9.
