PAUL OSIPOW

PRESS RELEASE

Paul Osipow (b. 1939) studied at the School of The Fine Arts Academy of Finland from 1958 to 1962, the Free Art School in 1960, and the University of Texas at Austin in 1975. Osipow has participated in group exhibitions in Finland since 1964 and internationally since 1967. His first of many solo exhibitions was held in Stockholm in 1965. In 1966, he received the Dukat Prize for his pop-influenced paintings. The State Prize for Visual Arts has been awarded to him twice, in 1970 and 1974.

Osipow has participated in numerous international exhibitions across Europe, the United States, and Japan. He represented Finland at the São Paulo Biennial in 1985 and took part in the Nordanad exhibition in Paris in 1986. He worked as an art instructor from 1978 to 1985, when he was awarded a 15-year artist grant by the Finnish state.

Paul Osipow is a consistently abstract painter whose art is primarily concerned with painterly elements such as color, explored both as an immaterial space and light and as a materialized surface layered through the painting process. His works are devoid of symbols, representational imagery, or literary references.

The Pori Art Museum exhibition showcases a selection of Osipow’s works from 1977 to 1987.
