ON METAPHORS / METAFORISTA
The exhibition, curated by Italian curator Luigi Fassi, seeks to present the key working methods of four artists, selected in an exemplary and analytical manner, highlighting the metaphorical instruments used in each work and the meanings they convey.
Italian curator Luigi Fassi described the ON METAPHORS / METAFORISTA exhibition as follows:
“On Metaphors” showcases the artistic research of four artists – two Swedish and two Italian. The art and working methods of all four are characterized by the use of metaphor. Metaphor is a central linguistic element in contemporary art, enabling the creation of semantic fields within thematic interactions.
The On Metaphors project focuses on the working methods of the four selected artists in a representative and analytical way. The emphasis is on the metaphorical instruments used in each artwork and the meanings they convey. The aim is to create a dual perspective – method and meaning, medium and outcome – facilitating an understanding of the working processes of young international artists.
While critical reflection and the viewer’s eye often seem to stop at the visual and expressive appearance of the artwork, On Metaphors / Metaforista instead delves into the metaphorical mechanisms of the works and the results formed through them.
The exhibition is built on the counterpoint of two contrasting approaches. The Swedish artists’ approach is predominantly precise and analytical, while the Italian artists’ works lean more toward playfulness and imagination.

The exhibition features works by two Swedish and two Italian artists, created from or generating metaphors, analogies, and figures of speech. These works provide material for reflection on the diverse use of materials and working methods in contemporary art. The artworks can be classified as art that does not necessarily require literary interpretation or explanation – the idea of the work arises within the viewer’s own mind.
Etymologically, the word metaphor derives from the Greek words meta, meaning “change,” and ferein, meaning “to carry” or “to convey.” The goal of the works is to “carry” the thoughts of the exhibition audience to the level of the artwork’s creation, presenting a transformation from which a new idea emerges.
The exhibition aims to produce a dual perspective – method and meaning, medium and outcome – to enhance understanding of the working processes of young international artists. The varying approaches of the artists in understanding and interpreting the concept of metaphor are individual. The Swedish artists’ works are marked by precision and analytical rigor, while the Italian artists have embraced humor with a mature perspective on the world of a child. The richness of insights derived from the surrounding world and popular culture, characteristic of today’s Western artists, is vividly present in the exhibition, where imagination knows no bounds.
