JUHANI TARNA
The artist Juhani Tarna (b. 1937) created the ambitious, visually striking Metropolis comic strip in the 1950s, set in a large city, though it was never published. A selection of surviving comic strips has been compiled for an exhibition in collaboration between the Kankaanpää City Museum and Pori Art Museum, showcasing Metropolis strips, gouache paintings, and sketches, presented as originals and enlargements.
On the upper floor of the gallery, Tarna’s abstract art is displayed, which he began creating after Metropolis when he started studying at the Free Art School. The geometric structures of the big city merged into his new style, based on the dynamics of colors and shapes.
Exhibition design: artist Juhani Tarna, Kankaanpää City Museum: Eeva-Kaisa Haikonen, Pori Art Museum: Anni Saisto and Kati Kunnas-Holmström.
The Metropolis. Illustrations from 1950-57 exhibition is on display at the Kankaanpää City Museum in Niinisalo from May 18 to August 8, 2013.
