“In my opinion, we can participate and make decisions about this upcoming exhibition as much as we dare to.”

At the heart of the Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation collection, reflecting the passion for art of Maire Gullichsen, is a sensitivity and lyricism of color. The focus lies on questions of color and form, alongside Maire’s interest in internationalism, contemporary trends, and art of her time. The Colors of Maire exhibition showcases works by several artists from the collection. As an introduction, the exhibition also features works created by Maire herself from the Mairea Foundation collection.

The Colors of Maire exhibition was planned and executed in 2012 in collaboration with the “Seniors Navigate the Art Collection” study group at the Pori Art Museum. The study group curated the exhibition from the Maire Gullichsen Art Foundation collection, reflecting the group members’ personal art experiences. Curiosity and the courage to share individual thoughts within the group fostered engaging discussions, leading to the choice of color as the exhibition’s centerpiece. The name The Colors of Maire aptly reflects the collector’s own approach to building her art collection.

The “Seniors Navigate the Art Collection” study group emerged from the idea of strengthening cooperation between the museum and its audience while fostering participatory, self-directed, and experiential learning in the art museum environment. The entire museum served as the learning environment. The starting point was learning and rejuvenating through art and culture, drawing on the seniors’ own life experiences and interests. Each participant contributed their unique perspectives, emotions, and experiences to the group, which guided the collective decisions on the exhibition theme and artwork selection.

This project is part of the nationwide Open Museum initiative (2010–2012), coordinated by the Finnish Museums Association, exploring new methods of audience engagement.
