SCENES – MARJATTA OJA

PRESS RELEASE (in Finnish)

The new video artwork Scenes by artist Marjatta Oja (b. 1962) consists of three theatrical scenes in which mechanically breathing dolls are integrated into the events on the videotape or act as observers of the situation, serving as surrogate figures for the artist.

The scenes in the artwork depict everyday activities, such as organizing belongings after a move or traveling by car or train. These events reflect the artist’s personal memories, impressions, and emotions, offering moments with which viewers can also identify.

The work is on display in the large exhibition hall of the art museum.

After its presentation in Pori, Scenes will become part of a traveling exhibition of Finnish art in Japan during 1994–1995. The exhibition has been curated by the Finnish Art Exchange Center (NÄKY), the Akseli Gallen-Kallela Museum, the Turku Art Museum, and the Pori Art Museum.
