NIINA SUOMINEN: IN MEMORIAM

Niina Suominen’s short film In Memoriam addresses human transience. Images of abandoned houses and the sounds of an auction intertwine into a story about what remains of us when we leave the stage. The film’s central characters are the deserted buildings and the spirit hidden within them.

Niina Suominen graduated from the Turku Arts Academy in 2004. She works as a director and media artist, employing traditional animation techniques. Her works have received awards at various international video art festivals. Her experimental puppet animation A Finnish Fable (2011) won the grand prize at the Videomedeja video festival in Serbia in 2011. Her piece Kutsun itseäni terveeksi (I Call Myself Healthy) won first prize at the Vidéoformes festival for video and multimedia in Clermont-Ferrand, France, in 2011.

The premiere of In Memoriam took place during the Tampere International Film Festival in the spring. The work was also selected for the Rotterdam Film Festival, one of the world’s largest audience- and industry-focused film events.
