PRINTMAKING, SCULPTURES – EMILIO GRECO
PRESS RELEASE
Emilio Greco, a sculptor, draftsman, and printmaker, was born in 1913 in Catania, Italy. He received his initial training at a workshop that crafted tomb monuments and later studied at the Palermo Academy of Fine Arts. His first solo exhibition was held in Rome in 1958, and the following year, he moved into a shared studio in Rome with Guttuso and several other young artists.
Today, Greco is one of the most renowned Italian artists; his works have been showcased around the world, including in various European countries, Japan, the Soviet Union, and the United States. Greco’s international acclaim is equally rooted in his achievements as both a sculptor and a printmaker. Since around 1950, Greco is said to have discovered his distinctive style, to which he has remained faithful throughout his career. His primary theme has been the portrayal of beauty, especially feminine beauty. For instance, his sculpture “The Bather” is regarded as one of the finest achievements in modern European sculpture. Greco is a master at capturing form and line.
Emilio Greco has served as a professor at the Naples Academy of Fine Arts and, in 1967, was appointed professor at the Rome Academy of Fine Arts. Additionally, he has been a visiting professor at several institutions, including the Munich Academy of Fine Arts.
Emilio Greco is presenting over 70 of his works in Pori, hosted by the Pori Art Museum. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with Eurographica Oy and Olivetti in Italy. During 1982, the exhibition will tour several museums across Finland. The Pori Art Museum has previously featured the works of Alberto Burri, Giacomo Manzù, Enrico Paulucci, and Walter Piacesi. Greco’s exhibition continues this series of showcasing Italian masters.
