WELCOME
Known for his large-scale, colorful works, Miika Nyyssönen initially trained as a painter but later transitioned to sculpture. As an artist, he is contemplative and intellectually oriented. His thinking reflects a strong architectural approach, influenced by the traditions of constructivism and concretism.
Nyyssönen does not allow himself to be confined by traditions or predetermined ways of thinking. He embraces new ideas with an open mind and utilizes a variety of materials and techniques, including computer-aided design. He achieves all this with ingenuity and insight, engaging with the past while firmly constructing his own unique artistic world.
In addition to creating sculptures and site-specific works, Nyyssönen also paints and produces installations, video art, and sound pieces. He has completed several public artworks in the Helsinki metropolitan area, one of the first being Poikkeama (Deviation) in 1995—a large-scale rupture in the brick facade of a building in Ruoholahti that reveals an oval-shaped interior with reliefs.
For the Sculpture Courtyard of the Pori Art Museum, Nyyssönen presents a series of exhibitions during the summer of 2011, based on the work 8 Sculptures. These large-scale, colorful, mathematically precise yet uniquely fragile works will change positions throughout the summer. The result is a continuously evolving series that offers a fresh perspective each time, responding to its surroundings—the beautiful courtyard of the art museum—as well as the relationship between each sculpture, the others, and the viewers wandering among them.
