BELGRADIAN YOUNG ARTISTS’ EXHIBITION IN FINLAND
PRESS RELEASE
The core idea behind the planning of this exhibition has been as follows: to present in a friendly yet geographically and culturally distant environment various directions represented by the younger generation of artists (generally under 35 years old) who are active in Belgrade or started their careers there, and have continued elsewhere, sometimes even beyond the borders of Yugoslavia.
This approach does not stem from a belief that contemporary art can be divided into “local” schools or that the art of a particular region should be viewed solely as an independent entity, as if it were a closed and isolated world. It is also important to recognize that the art scene is an inseparable part of its socio-cultural environment and that it is, in many ways, influenced by the broader context while simultaneously contributing to the ongoing development and transformation of that cultural atmosphere. Thus, it can be said that, while the art of young artists is linked to the Belgrade center, it is also part of the general (international) situation prevailing in Yugoslavia today. Moreover, it is an integral part of its surrounding culture, which means that in this environment, the consequences of these processes are most immediately evident.
The complexity of the phenomena, along with the number of artists and works in this exhibition, is sufficient to provide an intriguing overview of the work of Belgrade’s young artists over the past ten years. Furthermore, this exhibition aims more to suggest rather than explicitly demonstrate the kind of intellectual and social climate in which these phenomena have taken shape and evolved. The combination of various elements and the personal contributions of the artists have resulted in the artistic output featured in this exhibition.
