PAINTINGS – ARNE OLSSON & SCULPTURES – EERO HIIRONEN
PRESS RELEASE
Painter ARNE OLSSON (b.17.11.1918) lives in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. He has studied painting under the Swedish professor and painter Otte Sköld. He has also studied and travelled in France, Spain, Portugal, England, Belgium and Japan.
For many years, the sea has been a central theme in Arne Olsson’s art – “the praise of the sea”, as he puts it. His work is characterised by extreme reductionism and simplicity, an exploration of the relationship between colour and light. The exhibition presents a coherent body of work from recent years on the theme of the sea.
Arne Olsson has won several international prizes, including in 1966 in Brussels and Ostend, and grants from the Swedish and French governments. Olsson has participated in exhibitions since 1949.
Sculptor EERO HIIRONEN (b.1938 in Huittinen) currently lives and works in Ähtäri. He began his career in the late 1950s painting nature subjects, but soon moved on to abstract expression. The abstract form has characterised all his later work.
Eero Hiironen is especially known for his kinetic relief-like mirror collages, which are also based on experiences from nature. In recent years, Hiironen has made several large-scale public works, made of material which has been finely finished acid-resistant steel. The current exhibition features small-scale, stainless steel sculptures and wall reliefs from recent years.
Eero Hiironen has received several domestic awards and participated in national and international exhibitions since the 1950s. His works have been acquired in the most significant domestic collections. Eero Hiironen has served as a member of the National Fine Arts Commission since 1977.
