MATTI KOSKELA

PRESS RELEASE

Matti Koskela is a well-known graphic artist and sculptor from Lahti. He has held numerous solo exhibitions, primarily in museums and galleries across Finland. His works have also been featured in prominent international exhibitions worldwide, including the biennials of graphic art in Tokyo, Krakow, Fredrikstad, Heidelberg, and Mulhouse. Currently, Koskela’s graphic art is part of a touring Finnish color graphic art exhibition in the United States. Koskela has received numerous awards, including the Finnish State Art Prize in 1973. Between 1973 and 1979, he served as the Regional Artist for Visual Arts in the Häme Province.

The exhibition at Pori Art Museum is the most extensive Matti Koskela has presented to date. It is largely based on his invitational exhibition held last spring at the Västerås Art Museum in Sweden, which received an excellent reception there. The exhibition in Pori features drawings, graphics, sculptures, and rarely seen light works. Most of the pieces come from the past three years and are part of the “Growth” series. The starting point for this series is often a module, a simple basic unit that, through variation, forms a wide array of structures.
